Beside the oldest copper mine in Cuba is the sanctuary of The Virgin of Charity. When the mine shut down, worship became the main source of income for the town. The sale of flowers and statuettes of the Virgin has altered the workers’ reality because in order to get the minerals to manufacture the souvenirs, they must enter the abandoned mine shafts and jeopardize their lives.

Junto a la mina de cobre mas antigua de Cuba esta el santuario de la virgen de la caridad, Patrona de Cuba. Al cerrar la mina el culto se convirtió en la principal fuente de supervivencia para el pueblo. La venta de flores y estatuillas con la venerada imagen ha dado lugar a un nuevo tipo de obreros que por conseguir el mineral para manufacturar el souvenir, entran en los pozos abandonados a riesgo de su propia vida.
